Backing up my computer data

It's something we always kick ourselves after the fact. But when time is on our side, we never seem to do it.

At least, I don't.

So far, I've not crashed my computer (touch er, PLASTIC!)

Decided to do at least a half-yearly backup of my files to DVD. A backup of whatever that's on disk at that point in time.

Half a year may seem like insufficient.

Probably is.

But it's a balance between spending money on storage (I have loads of DVDs, which I find relatively less expensive than buying secondary disks storage or USB drives... but maybe I'll change my mind later).

Anyway, mental note to self: Give myself at least 2 to 3 hours to do the backups.

'Cos it did take that long to archive the file, and burn to DVD.

What I did:

Selected the files to backup (normally in a folder)
Deleted redundant files and kept the rest (even if it's Work-in-progress)
Temporarily moved files I do not want to backup out of the folder
Created an archive copy of the folder (I'm using a Mac: see "Finder"). Repeat this for files I want to backup
Created a BURN folder. Moved the archived files to this folder.
Clicked on "burn" just to check what much storage space is required (I prefer to maximise my DVD since it's a -R, i.e. burn once only)

Hmm.. I've not tried restoring an archived file though...

Ok, just did.

It worked.

Basically it's just a ZIP file.

Copy from DVD to harddisk
Double click on the ZIP file
OSX would automatically unarchive the files

Beautiful.

I must have heard this almost two decades ago. Two decades! It still sounds as solid as when I first heard it. Slash's guitar riffs kicks @ss. It was one of those songs that made me want to learn how to play the electric guitar.

The Creative Zen V-plus is a nice thing to have, but...

Wife and I went shopping today. I've been thinking of getting a MP3 player + recorder for sometime now. Passed by a Creative retail store at Marina. Sales guy was a friendly, patient and honest chap. Answered my questions. Let me try out a player. So I ended up buying this baby -- the Creative Zen V-plus:

Nice little gadget. At about 6cm x 4cm x 1cm, it fits into the palm or pocket neatly. FM receiver, audio recorder (pretty clear up to 1 metre), MP3 player, organiser, Calendar, Clock, removable disk, video player (OK for my needs)... At under $300 for a 8GB gadget with all the features, I guess it's a good buy. I'd even recommend it. It's certainly received relatively consistent positive reviews, like this and this one.

EXCEPT THAT THE SYNC SOFTWARE DOESN'T SUPPORT OS OTHER THAN WINDOWS! ARRGH!

*Sigh* I'm sure Creative would sell a lot more Zens if they support Macs and UMS music transfers. But not their fault . A less than perfect business decision, but not their fault nonetheless.

Let this be a reminder to me, never to buy on impulse. GRRR. I blame myself. Should've done my homework first. With verifiable information easily available on the Internet, I have absolutely no excuse.

Still no significant progress after a month. Practically the same thing I wrote last month. It's not funny anymore. I think I'll have to just trash the posts that I'm probably never going to write anyway...
